Jio Platforms IPO Explained: Date, Size, Retail Quota and What Beginners Should Know

India may be about to see its biggest IPO ever. Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance, is finishing its offer documents after meeting investors in five countries. Here is the plain version: what is happening, what the dates and numbers are, and what a first-time investor should think about.

What is happening?

Jio Platforms, the company that houses Reliance's digital and telecom businesses including Reliance Jio Infocomm, plans an initial public offering (IPO). The issue is estimated at about $3.8 billion and is touted as India's largest public offering (Mint, PTI). It would be the first IPO from the Reliance group since 2008, and the first from a consumer-focused business inside the group.

The timeline so far:

  • June 2026: Jio Platforms filed its draft IPO papers (DRHP) with the market regulator SEBI (Mint reports June 19).
  • August 28, 2026: SEBI issued its final observations, clearing the way to proceed.
  • By October 1, 2026: Roadshows in the US, UK, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong, led by Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani, were complete. The company is now preparing its red herring prospectus (RHP), the final offer document (PTI).

The numbers

  • Fresh issue: up to 27 crore new shares, about 2.9% of the company after the issue (draft prospectus).
  • Valuation: people familiar with the matter have said about $137 billion. This is a report, not an official figure. Final size and price are not decided yet.
  • Use of money: mainly to repay or prepay about Rs 27,500 crore of borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, plus general corporate purposes.
  • Business: about 506 million mobile subscribers (39.29% market share) and 26.85 crore 5G customers as of June 2026. In FY26, Jio Platforms reported profit after tax of Rs 30,053 crore, up 15%, on revenue of Rs 1,46,885 crore, up 14.5% (Mint).
  • Existing investors: Reliance Industries holds about 66.4%. Meta and Google together hold about 17.7%.

When could it open?

Nothing is official yet. CNBC-TV18, citing people familiar with the matter, reports a possible timeline of: anchor book October 19, IPO opens October 21, closes October 23, listing October 28. All of this is subject to market conditions and could change. Price and size are expected to be decided after investor feedback.

What about small investors?

According to CNBC-TV18's sources, 35% of the retail and HNI portion is meant for retail investors applying for shares worth up to Rs 2 lakh, and 15% is split among larger investors. The draft papers also mention a reserved category for existing Reliance Industries shareholders, but the exact share has not been disclosed (Mint). Management reportedly wants meaningful retail participation.

IPO basics for beginners

This section is general background, not from the articles above.

  • An IPO is when a company sells its shares to the public for the first time and lists on the stock exchanges.
  • The DRHP is a draft filed for the regulator's review. The RHP is the final document with the price band and dates. Read the RHP, not social media posts.
  • Anchor investors are large institutions that buy a day before the public issue opens.
  • Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial rumour price. It is not a guide to what will happen on listing.

What young investors should do now

  1. Wait for the official price band and RHP. Dates and valuation are still reports.
  2. Do not invest money you cannot afford to lose. A famous brand does not guarantee a listing gain.
  3. Understand the debt angle. Much of the money raised goes to repay borrowings, rather than to fund growth.
  4. Check how you will apply. You need a demat account and UPI set up before the issue opens.
  5. Keep your emergency fund first. Invest only after it is in place.

The bottom line

If the reports hold, Jio's IPO could be a landmark moment for India's markets. For beginners, it is also a good chance to learn how IPOs work before putting real money in.
